What do you need to know?
The yacht master's license allows the holder to pilot recreational motorised and sailing vessels of up to 20 metres with a motor of suitable power. It also authorises the user to pilot vessels in the space between the coast and up to 60 sea miles offshore.
People who have passed the theoretical part in Catalonia and have done internships in academies approved by the Generalitat de Catalunya can apply for the issuance and renewal of a degree online.
In all other cases, the procedure must be done in person.
Immediate issuance and renewal service: documentation can be submitted to certain offices (see Step 1 - In person) to issue and renew the degree and obtain it on the spot.

For registration for the theoretical exams, you must consult the calendar of calls (PDF) that are published each year in the DOGC.
Documentation to be attached to the application:
- Photocopy of ID, residence card or passport of the applicant.
- Certified photocopy of a recreational boat master’s license or equivalent qualification.
- Certified copy of accreditation of yacht master courses which can be validated.
- Proof of payment/bank transfer of the fee for the exam.
- Medical certificate demonstrating that the applicant meets the conditions stipulated in the Resolution of 5 January 2009 of the General Merchant Marine Directorate. This certificate may be substituted with a certified copy of a nautical medical examination by the Marine Social Institute (Institut Social de la Marina - ISM) or a certificate issued by military doctors demonstrating that the person in question has the necessary aptitude to pilot a vessel.

Preparation for the exams
In order to prepare for exams applicants have two options:
- They may take the exam on their own account.
- They may enrol in one of the approved academies which will help them prepare for the exam.
Applicants may consult the webpage of the Escola de Capacitació Nauticopesquera de Catalunya (Nautical and Fishing Training School of Catalonia) about the theoretical exam programme and the structure of the exam.

Persons who do not appear on the admission lists may submit their claim in writing, during the three days following the publication of the lists.
Persons who do not appear on the admission list and have not submitted the corresponding claim can not take the exam.
