What do you need to know?
The yacht master's license allows the holder to pilot recreational motorised and sailing vessels of up to 20 metres with a motor of suitable power. It also authorises the user to pilot vessels in the space between the coast and up to 60 sea miles offshore.
People who have passed the theoretical part in Catalonia and have done internships in academies approved by the Generalitat de Catalunya can apply for the issuance and renewal of a degree online.
In all other cases, the procedure must be done in person.
Immediate issuance and renewal service: documentation can be submitted to certain offices (see Step 1 - In person) to issue and renew the degree and obtain it on the spot.
Any person who meets the requirements.
- The deadline to renew the license ends with the validity of the license (ten years).
- Persons over seventy years of age must renew the license every two years.
Documentation to attach to the application:
- If the license is being renewed because it has expired:
- License-sized colour photograph with ID (NIF) number written on the back. This must be submitted in an envelope.
- Photocopy of valid ID, residence permit or passport.
- Medical certificate demonstrating that the applicant meets the required conditions stipulated in the Resolution of 5 January 2009 of the General Merchant Marine Directorate. This certificate may be substituted with a certified copy of a nautical medical examination by the Marine Social Institute (Institut Social de la Marina - ISM) or a certificate issued by military doctors demonstrating that the person in question has the necessary aptitude to pilot a vessel.
- Certified photocopy of the yacht master's license of the same type as the one being requested.
- Proof of payment/bank transfer of the fee for the renewal of the license.
- If the license is being renewed due to loss or theft:
- License-sized colour photograph with ID (NIF) number written on the back. This must be submitted in an envelope.
- Photocopy of valid ID, residence permit or passport.
- Medical certificate demonstrating that the applicant meets the required conditions stipulated in the Resolution of 5 January 2009 of the General Merchant Marine Directorate. A yacht master's license can be renewed either because it has expired or been lost or stolen.
Validation of licenses received before the order of 17 June 1997
Licenses issued before the order of 17 June 1997 was put into effect are no longer valid. This includes the following licenses:
- Sport boating licenses for motor 1st class and sport sailing licenses.
- Coastal recreational boat master's licenses.
- Recreational boating master's licenses in accordance with that established in the order of 31 January 1990.

The supporting document will be valid for 10 years. People who have reached the age of 70 must renew it every 5 years. These validity can be modified in accordance with the limitations established in the psychophysical fitness document.
