What do you need to know?
The basic navigation small craft skipper title allows the management of leisure craft up to 8 metres in length with the engine power appropriate appropriate to its length, provided that the boat does not sail up to 5 miles in any direction from an accessible harbour or beach. In addition, they can manage jet skis.
To obtain the basic small craft skipper title, you must:
- Pass a theoretical exam.
- Take the radio communications training course.
- Complete safety and navigation practices or pass a practical safety and navigation exam.
To obtain the basic motor and sailing skipper title, in addition to the previous requirements, you must:
- Complete sailing practices.
People who passed the theoretical part in Catalonia and have done internships in academies approved by the Generalitat de Catalunya can apply for the issuance and renewal of a degree online. In all other cases, the procedure must be done in person.
Immediate issuance and renewal service: at certain offices (see Step 1 - In person) the documentation can be submitted to issue and renew the degree and obtain it on the spot.
Anyone who meets the requirements.
- The deadline for renewing the title is its expiration date (after ten years).
- In the case of people aged over 70 years old, the title must be renewed every two years.
- Colour passport photograph with the applicant’s Tax Identification Number (NIF) written on the reverse (in an envelope).
- Photocopy of the applicant’s current National Identity Document (DNI), residence permit or passport.
- Documentary evidence of having undertaken practical exercises in radio communications. If the practical exercises were undertaken in another autonomous community, documentary evidence to the effect that they have been carried out to the satisfaction of the relevant autonomous community must be submitted.
- Documentary evidence of having undertaken practical exercises in safety and navigation or passed the practical examination in safety and navigation; in this case, it is only necessary to submit such documentation if the examination was passed in another autonomous community. If the practical exercises were undertaken in another autonomous community, documentary evidence to the effect that they have been carried out to the satisfaction of the relevant autonomous community must be submitted.
- Official medical documentation certifying that the interested party meets the necessary physical conditions that are outlined in Resolution of 5 January 2009 of the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy. Instead of medical documentation it is possible to submit a certified photocopy of evidence that the applicant is in the correct physical condition for sailing: the documentation relating to the medical examination of the Social Institute of the Merchant Navy (ISM) or of those performed by military doctors.
- Proof of payment of the renewal fee.
- For the engine- and sail-powered type, it is also necessary to submit documentary evidence of having completed practical exercises in sailing. If the practical exercises were undertaken in another autonomous community, documentary evidence to the effect that they have been carried out to the satisfaction of the relevant autonomous community must be submitted.

Face-to-face renewal
The supporting document or its submission depending on the place where the application was submitted (see Step 1).
The supporting document will be valid for 10 years. People who have reached the age of 70 must renew it every 5 years. These validity can be modified in accordance with the limitations established in the psychophysical fitness document.
Internet renewal
You will receive the final title at the address you provided in the application.
You will be able to download the provisional title for three months from the date of renewal, by accessing the application.
