What do you need to know?
What is a trade show?
It is a periodic commercial event, aimed at a professional audience, whose purpose is to exhibit goods or offer services to:
- promote innovation and disseminate knowledge of the different areas of economic activity
- facilitate business contacts and deals,
- to bring together the supply and demand
The procedures of the trade shows are:
- Communicate the fair (professional audience)
- Modify the data of the fair (professional audience)
- Change the owner of the fair (professional audience)
- Cancel the fair (professional audience)
Differences between Trade shows and Consumer fairs
Trade Shows must be differentiated from other fair activities such as Consumer Fairs. These are also periodic commercial events but aimed at the general audience.
In the case of Consumer fairs, sales may be conducted and merchandise taken away from the venue.
In order to organize a Consumer fair, you need:
- That the organizer communicates the market fair to the town hall of the municipality where it is to take place
- That the organizer requests an authorization from the town hall, if the activity occupies a space of public domain, for example, when the market fair is held in the street.
- That the city council transfer the communications or authorizations of a market fair to the Generalitat to register it in the Register of fair activities.
For more information on the types of fair activities and their characteristics, consult the frequently asked questions (information only in Catalan).
Remember
The following are not considered to be trade fairs:
- Markets, which are traditionally called fairs, where the main activity is the direct sale of merchandise.
- Universal expositions, governed by the Paris Convention of 22 November 1928.
- Congresses
- Activities that pursue cultural, educational, scientific, artistic, civic or social ends.
- Promotional activities or sales of any kind organized by retail establishments or specialist companies involved in organizing these kinds of events.
