The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is a structural fund of the European Union that aims to address regional imbalances and strengthen economic, social and territorial cohesion.
The ERDF finances 7-year investment programs, in which the European Commission and state and regional governments have a shared responsibility. Investments financed through the ERDF promote a Europe that is smarter, greener, more connected, more socially-oriented and more approachable to its citizens.
It is in this context that the Generalitat de Catalunya designs and manages the ERDF operational programs in Catalonia, which must be framed in regional strategies for smart specialization (RIS3). In the case of Catalonia, this strategy is the Strategy for Smart Specialization of Catalonia (RIS3CAT).
The ERDF resources allocated to each of these priorities depend on the region's category. There are 3 regional categories: the most developed, the transition regions and the least developed. Catalonia belongs to the category of the most developed regions.
With ERDF funding, the European Union also promotes internal territorial cooperation, between regions and countries.
