Before setting off
- Check the vehicle, especially: brakes, steering, tyres, oil, seat positions, rear view mirrors and seatbelts.
- Make sure you are sufficiently rested before setting off.
- Don't eat too much as this will make you sleepy.
- Don't consume alcohol, stimulating drinks or any medication that could affect the driver's perceptions.
- Allow enough time for the journey, selecting the best routes and avoiding frequently congested roads.
- Listen to traffic reports to find out about road conditions and other related information.
During the journey
- Always wear a seatbelt, even for short journeys.
- If you are travelling with young children, use child restraining devices.
- Motorcyclists and scooter riders must wear a correctly fastened helmet.
- Don't overload the vehicle and arrange the luggage so it does not block the driver's view.
- Adapt your speed to the prevailing traffic conditions.
- Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and others.
- In the event of a breakdown, get the vehicle off the road if at all possible and take the appropriate steps. Use warning triangles, placing them at least 50 metres in front of and behind the vehicle.
- Once you have arrived at your holiday destination, don't let your guard drop on short journeys. These can be as dangerous as the original journey or even more so.
