Technological capabilities
The ENG4BIO-PBI&PPF center offers R&D services in industrial biotechnology with the following capabilities:
- Design of microbial strains: Creation of strains for recombinant production of proteins and metabolites using computational tools, modeling and synthetic biology, such as modular cloning and CRISPR/Cas9. Experience with E. coli and P. pastoris.
- Integrated microbial bioprocesses: Development and intensification of bioprocesses based on microbial cell factories to produce proteins and metabolites, including fermentations in bioreactors operated continuously or discontinuously fed and initial stages of product recovery.
- Biocatalytic processes: Design of reactions with enzymes or multienzyme systems to produce compounds of interest. It includes enzymatic characterization, use of advanced enzyme immobilization techniques, as well as optimization of reactions and reactor operation strategies with soluble or immobilized enzymes.
- Process scaling: Scaling of fermentation processes and initial stages of recovery processes from laboratory to pilot scale to assess their technical and economic feasibility, as well as to produce sufficient quantities of product to evaluate and validate applications.
