The Circular Economy and Sustainable solutions for Agri-food in the Mediterranean
CESAM project aims to contribute, through investment in SMEs, to the new European path towards a circular economy model and to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda by contributing to the expansion of innovative agri-food value chains. In this sense, the project will support investment in interregional innovation to expand value chains in sustainable solutions through the existing association between Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Occitania. These Regions have a cooperation entity called the Euroregion Pyrenees Mediterranean (EPM), which is the coordinator of this project.
The project will focus on the common strategic sectors identified by the three regional Smart Specialization Strategies (S3) to mobilize funding towards innovative and sustainable technologies for the circular economy. The three regions share the same concern for the sustainable management of water and the sustainable management of resources in the agri-food sector.
The project is structured around four strategic topics related to the sustainable and circular agri-food economy:
- Industrial water treatment and recycling / Concerted use of water.
- Packaging: Eco-conception / plastic free, new materials or circular solutions.
- Optimization of processes and circular processes: reduction of waste.
- Valorisation of co-products.
The CESAM project will enable the three regions, through innovative specialization, to make innovation in all its dimensions a priority, and go beyond the strict innovation and regional scale with a view to better position the Euroregion area on a European scale and to better respond to the global challenges.
